Welcome to the Workshop 2012 Conference Schedule. This is where you can learn about all of the presentations and learning opportunities at Workshop. You can create your schedule by selecting the sessions you are interested in participating in. Your selection is not a reservation for that session, but rather, a simply way for you to create and view the sessions you hope to attend.
Attendees of the session will learn about the importance of serving breakfast to all children in all schools every day. New Jersey ranks a disappointing 48th in school breakfast consumption according to the Food Research and Action Center. Recently, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture and the New Jersey Department of Education sent a release to all schools in the state expressing how important it is for schools to work on increasing breakfast consumption. The American Dairy Association and the Dairy Council, Inc. are committed to helping schools increase the daily participation rate. The session will offer ideas and solutions to this crucial issue as well as underscore the link to learning and overall wellness.
The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is a 24-state consortium working together to develop next-generation K-12 assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards. New Jersey is a Governing Board state in PARCC and has been actively involved in the development of the assessment system. PARCC assessments will replace New Jersey’s current assessments and are scheduled to be administered statewide in 2014-2015. The presentation will review PARCC’s assessment system and provide an update on current PARCC activities.
The Regional Achievement Centers (RACs) are seven newly-created field teams that will lead the state’s efforts to turn around persistently struggling schools and those with troubling achievement gaps. The RACs represent the New Jersey Department of Education’s most ambitious, focused effort to improve student achievement across the state. This session will define the intervention strategies, based upon eight proven turnaround principles that can drive student achievement in low-performing schools. The session will also review the resources – including the explicit plans, tools, and funding – and the partnerships with the district, school, board of education, parents, communities and students that are necessary to increase student achievement.
In June 2012, the New Jersey State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English Language Arts and in Mathematics. The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and other experts to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our students for college and careers. This session will present the basic instructional shifts needed to meet the demands of the Common Core State Standards. It will also explain timelines for implementation and the alignment of the standards with new curricula and assessments.
